Read-a-Thon

Last year we had our very first Read-A-Thon. It was a huge success and the kids have asked for us to have one again. On March 3rd and 4th students will go to our neighborhood library during tutoring and have snacks and read books with their tutors. For every $10 donated, 1 child will read for 1 minute, for a total of 45 minutes. Scroll to the bottom to donate.

Some Reading Statistics

  • 3 out of 5 people in American prisons can’t read.
  • Approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels.
  • Approximately 40% of students across the nation cannot read at a basic level.
  • Almost 70% of low-income fourth grade students cannot read at a basic level.
  • When a child can't read, their chances of incarceration, homelessness, and unemployment increase.

Donate
Click on the button above to donate to the Read-A-Thon. By default JustGiving asks for a tip to offset processing fees, you do not have to tip and we are not charged these fees. JustGiving will ask if you want to tip "JustGiving" with your donation. In the blue box under "tip to JustGiving from Blackbaud" you can click on "enter custom amount" and choose the tip amount (e.g. $1). On the message please note "read-a-thon".

LYN House Statistics

  • All third grade students in tutoring passed I-Read.
  • Over 80% of kids in our after school program have been with us for more than 3 years.
  • Students at our school tutoring site were only at a 38% mastery of reading skills and by the end of the school year on average they were at a 86% mastery of skills.

Donation Support

At LYN House we use the Orton-Gillingham method, an approved Science of Reading Curriculum to teach our students how to read. Your donation support will allow us to:
  • Tutor 15 kids at LYN House 1:1 for one hour 2 days a week.
  • Tutor 12 - 15 Kindergarten and First grade students  at Washington Irving School 1:1 for half-hour 2 days a week.
  • Continued staff trainings on best reading practices to help train volunteers and continue to create and add to existing curriculum.
  • Purchase and create materials for students and tutors to have during tutoring.
